What the Project Was About

For this project, we had to create a short film (60–90 seconds) that captured the meaning of a single word. One of the main rules was that no sound could be used, so we had to rely only on camera shots, angles, and editing to tell the story. The goal wasn’t just to film random clips and make a monatage, but it was to make a sequence that actually felt like a real situation, something that could happen in school.

My Approach

The word my partner Sam and I got was tolerant. We immediately started thinking about how to represent that idea visually without saying it. Our goal was to make something simple and easy to understand, while still being creative and polished, similar to the examples we saw in class. We focused on body language, objects (like the lunch tray), and different camera angles to communicate the meaning of our word.

Brainstorming

We used the brainstorming sheet to throw down all of our ideas—possible scenes, props, and emotions that connected to tolerance. This helped us figure out what shots we would need later. From there, we made a storyboard with 15 frames, showing what each shot would look like and the order they’d appear in. That made filming much easier because we already knew how the story would flow, where to place the camera, and what pacing and transitions would work. On thing me and Sam did was we said we'd use our friends to act and overall help convey the meaning of tolerant.

Editing

For editing, I used iMovie. I kept the film within the 60–90 second limit by trimming clips and making sure it flowed smoothly. I used simple cuts, close-ups, and wide shots to keep it interesting without sound. I think it turned out good, but next time I’d experiment more with visual effects. There were numerous shots where there needed parts cut out do to tiny errors, and during our editing it helped make everything flow.

Reflection

Overall, I think we did a strong job planning ahead. Our shots connected well, and the story came through clearly. We used enough variety in camera angles to hold attention. If I could change anything, I would add more hand gestures or subtle actions to make the idea of tolerance even clearer, and I’d work on stabilizing some of the handheld shots. But in the end, Sam and I both feel we did a good job with this project.
